The shipping company J. Lauritzen A/S, also known as JL, is a Danish shipping company which operates on a global basis.
Within its three business areas LauritzenCool AB, Lauritzen Kosan A/S and Lauritzen Bulkers A/S, J. Lauritzen is today among the leading companies on the international shipping market.
The activities are administered from the head offices in Copenhagen and Stockholm significantly with respectively commercial and operational assistance from JL's overseas offices.
The activities are all based on reliable and flexible sea transport services at competitive market conditions.
J. Lauritzen owns and controls a modern fleet of reefer vessels, LPG/gas carriers and grab-fitted bulk carriers.
The company employs around 1,100 highly-skilled and experienced people at sea and ashore.
History
J. Lauritzen has come a long way since its start more than 100 years ago!
It was founded on 15th April 1884 by Ditlev Lauritzen, but as the age of majority was 25 years at that time and as Ditlev was only 24 years old, he was obliged to establish the company in his father's name - Jørgen Lauritzen. So the company became J. Lauritzen and J. Lauritzen it has remained to this day.
J. Lauritzen started out as a small trading company selling building materials and later also artificial fertilisers and coal.
In 1888, Ditlev Lauritzen's sphere of interest switched from trading to shipping when he acquired his first vessel, the Uganda.
JL has been involved in various shipping activities over the years, but decided at an early stage to concentrate on the kind of specialised shipping which requires technically-advanced vessels and expertise.
Ownership
J. Lauritzen is today owned 100% by the JL Foundation.
